The Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs have opened new doors for the advancement of the water, sanitation and hygiene sector. Central to this advance is the recognition of the importance of capacity development to enable countries to meet their MDG targets. Thus, developing the capacities of institutions and individuals who are at the cutting edge of WASH service delivery has been the focus of the Streams of Knowledge, a strong southern-led network of Resource Centres (RCs) actively engaged in capacity development for water, sanitation and hygiene.

The International WASH Practitioner's Marketplace and Fair shall be the first Streams of Knowledge STREAMS) global activity that will bring together a planning and training team from different Resource Centres (RCs) who will be engaged in active "trading and marketing" of different WASH technologies and approaches utilised all over the world in providing universal access to safe water supply and sanitation. It is designed to showcase available and tested WASH knowledge, experiences, expertise, products, and services at the same time a venue for networking among participants.

With the theme "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in schools, Achieving the MDGs Targets by 2015", The 19th Regional Water and Sanitation Seminar will bring together stakeholders to share experiences from the region. It is expected that a fiarly large number of participants will be drawn from those who have participated in the joint UNICEF/WSSCC 'WASH in schools' initiative. Providing adequate water and sanitation in school is essential if the enrolment, learning and retention of girls is to improve and is the key to meeting MDGs 2 (Achieve Universal Primary Education) and 3 (Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women). It has been noted that lack of appropriately private and sanitary facilities has a greater impact on girls than boys, contributing to decisions on whether or not to attend school.

The events will be held at the Plaza Beach Hotel and Severin Sea Lodge, Mombasa, Kenya. The Plaza Beach Hotel is a laid back 4 star beachfront resort hotel.
